From Training to Collaboration: UCL CanDetect Researchers Join Key Pancreatic Cancer Events in Portugal
TRANSPAN is a multinational network within the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) scheme, focusing on the identification of biological markers for prevention and translational medicine in pancreatic cancer. As a member of this network, UCL PhD student Kyra Fraser, had the opportunity to attend a training school in Coimbra, Portugal in September this year to learn more about machine learning and AI tools in pancreatic cancer research.
The three-day program provided background on key machine learning methodologies applicable to translational research, with expertise from a range of researchers in the field based at the prestigious Coimbra University. Since attending, Kyra has been applying her new-found knowledge to her own datasets, which is helping to identify the most promising biomarkers for the early detection of cancer.
A few weeks later, Kyra returned to Portugal, this time along with Dr Pilar Acedo (CanDetect Co-investigator), and UCL research assistants Maria Rosado and Yuchen Yang to attend the 2nd Botton Champalimaud International Pancreatic Cancer Conference in Lisbon. Across the three days of the conference, the team attended many interesting and inspiring talks from researchers across the world, and established new collaborations for future work.
